Rooted in Gangtey: The Story Behind Dawa’s Craft
A conversation with the young entrepreneur keeping Bhutanese tradition alive, one piece at a time.
There is a particular kind of quiet in Gangtey Valley, the kind that asks you to slow down before it will tell you anything. It is the same quiet that shaped Dawa, a young entrepreneur who grew up here and chose to build her life and her business exactly where she started.
Today, Dawa runs a handicraft shop in the valley, working in beadwork, textiles, and handcrafted pieces rooted in Bhutanese tradition. Gangtey Lodge has come to know her not only as a local artisan, but as a collaborator on a greenhouse project currently taking shape in the valley. This is her story, largely in her own words.
Growing Up in the Valley
Dawa did not set out to become a business owner. "I did not originally plan to go into this business," she says. "It came from passion and circumstance." She grew up watching traditional crafts made at home, and within the community, a skill she noticed was slowly fading among younger generations.
"I wanted to create something that not only supports my livelihood but also keeps our culture alive," she says. In 2024, that instinct became a business: a small setup, focused on handmade, locally inspired products for visitors to the valley.
Why Gangtey, and Not Somewhere Else

For many young Bhutanese, opportunity has pulled toward Thimphu or Paro, Bhutan's larger and more developed hubs. Dawa chose to stay.
"Gangtey is not just a place to live. It is home," she says. "While places like Thimphu and Paro are more developed, Gangtey has a unique charm that cannot be replaced." She describes the valley itself as a kind of teacher. "Gangtey means peace and connection to me. It is calm, spiritual, and deeply rooted in tradition. It teaches me patience, simplicity, and respect for nature and culture."
Craft as a Form of Preservation
Ask Dawa what her work means to her, and the answer is rarely about commerce. "Handicraft work is more than business. It is a way of preserving identity," she says. "Every piece we sell carries a story of Bhutanese tradition."
Her guiding values are straightforward: "Honesty, quality, and respect for tradition. I see my role as someone who helps keep our traditions alive, while also supporting the local community by promoting local craftsmanship."
Building Something Remote, and Doing It Anyway
Running any business in a remote Himalayan valley comes with a particular set of challenges, and Dawa is candid about them. "One of the biggest challenges has been the remote location," she says. "Unlike bigger towns, we do not have a constant flow of customers throughout the year."
Rather than stepping back during the quiet, off-season months, she used them to refine her work. "During difficult times, I focused on improving my products and staying patient. I also learned to manage resources carefully." What kept her going, she says, was a sense of purpose larger than any single season. "I am doing this for preserving our culture, not just for myself."
A Craft Shaped by the Land Around It
Dawa's handicraft work is rooted in Bhutanese tradition, with nature shaping the designs, colours and patterns she creates.
Even working indoors with beads and thread, Dawa describes her craft as inseparable from nature. "Everything around me, the materials, the inspiration, comes from the environment," she says. "My favorite part is how nature inspires designs, colors, and patterns in our crafts."
That relationship extends to how she lives, not just what she makes. "Living and working in this environment makes my life more balanced and peaceful. It reminds me to slow down and appreciate simple things."
A Growing Collaboration with Gangtey Lodge
A greenhouse project is taking root in collaboration with Gangtey Lodge.
Gangtey Lodge first introduced guests to Dawa through visits to her ancestral home and craft shop. That connection has since grown into something more hands-on: a greenhouse project taking shape in collaboration with the lodge. This collaboration with Dawa is a pilot project for Gangtey Lodge, to create meaningful and sustainable economic opportunities within the local community. The aim is to support local entrepreneurs while ensuring that more of the income generated by tourism stays within the valley. The Lodge provides seeds, investment, and expertise to help Dawa establish and develop her greenhouse, with the vegetables she grows then purchased by the Lodge.
The project reflects the Lodge’s broader commitment to supporting sustainable livelihoods, encouraging young people to build businesses and livelihoods in the valley, and helping to stem rural-to-urban migration. By creating a direct link between the Lodge’s operations and a local entrepreneur, it keeps tourism income circulating within the community while supporting the preservation of local traditions and culture. Ultimately, the initiative is about connecting tourism meaningfully to the community and ensuring that the people and places that make Gangtey unique can share in the benefits of tourism. The project is still taking shape, with further updates and imagery to follow as the work progresses.
For Dawa, projects like this point toward a larger vision. "If resources were unlimited, I would love to create a small workshop space where visitors can see how handicrafts are made and even try making them," she says. It is a vision Gangtey Lodge is proud to support.
Craft, Community and What Comes Next
Dawa is thoughtful about what she hopes visitors take from her work. "I hope visitors understand that our crafts are not just souvenirs. They are part of our identity and culture," she says. "When I see products being appreciated by visitors, or even places like Gangtey Lodge, I feel proud that our local work is being recognized."
Her ambitions for the years ahead are grounded but clear: to expand her shop to include work from other local artisans, and, in time, to grow into "a well-known local brand that supports multiple families in the community."
Her Message to Gangtey's Next Generation

Outside of work, Dawa spends her time with family and in nature, the same forces that shape her craft. Asked what she would tell young people in the valley considering their own path, her answer is unhurried but firm.
"Value your roots," she says. "You don't always need to leave your home to find success. Sometimes, opportunities are right where you are."
A Story Still Being Written
Dawa's business is small today, by her own description, but its roots go deep. It is a story about staying rather than leaving, about tradition as something lived rather than displayed, and about a valley that continues to shape the people who choose to build their lives within it.
